While talking with my sister the other morning, we kept coming back to the same question: “Is life really supposed to be this chaotic?” For some, maybe you’ve mastered the art of less is more, and you’ve beautifully eliminated the hurry in life. But for others (like me), maybe you feel that despite your best efforts, you seem to attract chaos and a jam-packed calendar.
Whether you’re juggling kids, work, family obligations, medical issues, life’s stresses, birthday parties every weekend, extracurricular schedules that might as well be a game of Tetris, financial hardship, or other things, the truth is that certain seasons of life can feel very overwhelming. Many of those seasons are completely out of our control.
But as my sweet friend and sister in Christ recently reminded me, God doesn’t give us more than we can handle. You’ve probably heard that phrase before. It’s admittedly easier to say than to actually internalize, especially when you’re in the thick of it. But let’s take it one step further. God only gives us what we can handle with Him.
God never intended for us to go about this life without Him. Schedules will fill up. Your family will have demands and needs. Trials will come your way. But God doesn’t want you to muscle through it and just float through life. He wants you to rest in His arms and give all your burdens, worries, and anxieties to Him. Nothing is too big or too small for Him.
Personally, when I’ve felt completely overloaded, I have never regretted stopping to pray and ask God for help. It’s not that I get an instant response or immediate relief in my schedule (although often He makes a way to help me in some way). In those moments when I stop, take a deep breath, and allow myself to spend time with Him, I feel peace.
Do I think there are some things I can do to lessen the chaos? Yes. Are some things completely out of my control? Absolutely. Regardless if it’s a quick or lengthy path to a less chaotic life, I know that all along the way, when I open my hands to let God walk with me and guide me, I feel infinitely better.
Because that’s who He is. He’s our calm in the storm and His peace surpasses all understanding.
So if you’re feeling bogged down with life right now, take a moment and talk to God. He’s always listening, and He is always ready to hold you close. “Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7 (NLT)
